Over the last couple years the CyberEagles robotics, operating out of Sherwood Park, Alberta have assisted the visually impaired by creating a 3D printer SIF file that can be shared worldwide.
The benefits of this SIF file is that once developed are:
ALL communities can access the file online for FREE.
Most local libraries and schools now have access to a 3D printer.
The cost of printing a set of braille blocks is significantly reduced. A full set can cost less than $10 and in some cases less than $3. A similar product offered by LEGO retails for $141 (CAN).
Parents can easily access this product for at-home tools, and school board can easily distribute them to classrooms in need
This project began when the need was bought to the attention of Ryan Katcher, a coach and mentor under the umbrella of "First Robotics Canada" when his son joined CyberEagles Robotics. Part of the program involves community outreach. It was determined than less than 5 sets of braille blocks existed in Alberta.
To date the CyberEagles Robotics have printed and distributed over 80 full Braille Block sets to multiple communities and school boards across Canada.
The SIF file has been published for public use and can be found here: LINK
